Linda Montanile-Smith, R.A.

Architecture has been my passion since childhood, inspired by my father’s construction ability and my grandfather’s woodworking. After earning my B.S. in Design from Arizona State University and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, I began my career at design-build firms in Arizona, Pennsylvania and California, where I learned to blend design and construction. During this time, I was the lead designer and project manager for the Margarido House in Oakland, CA, the first custom home in Northern California to achieve LEED for Homes Platinum certification and the first in the U.S. to earn both LEED-H Platinum and GreenPoint Rated recognition.

In 2013, I established Phitown Design, a practice primarily focused on multifamily development and investment properties, which strengthened my ability to balance design vision with functionality, constructability, and budget. Over time, the firm evolved naturally toward custom residential design, where each home tells its own story through thoughtful space planning, proportion, and light.

In 2025, my practice became Formia Architecture + Design, a name inspired by my Italian roots. My mother is from Spigno, a small town near Formia, and my father is from Brusciano, near Naples. Formia represents both where my roots come from and what I value most in design: a sense of place, connection, family, and lasting beauty.

I am a licensed architect in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Arizona.

about me + experience

mission + vision

I design spaces that bring people together and elevate the way they live, work and connect. Whether its a home, a business, restaurant, or something entirely unique every project begins with understanding the people it’s for and translating their needs, values, and vision into a space that feels deeply personal yet timeless. Through thoughtful design, smart functionality, and an eye for beauty, I strive to create environments that leave a lasting impact, shaping not only the appearance of a space but the quality of life it supports.
